President's Post |
|
As winter
finally arrives, not officially but with snow to prove it, we
are mindful once again of those exposed to the cold.
So it was
with regret to learn that the Overflow Emergency Night Shelter,
scheduled to open at Knights of Columbus on November 1st, had
to be delayed pending the issuance of a permit by the City of
Fort Collins. Now the earliest date for providing that service
will be December 1.
When it
comes to addressing the matter of homelessness and human services
on a systemic basis, the forthcoming 9:00 am meeting of IFC this
Thursday, November 3rd at Foothills
Unitarian
Universalist Church is most timely. The program on
forthcoming Legislative Issues will include as panelists State
Representatives Randy Fischer and John Kefalas and Fort Collins
City Council Mayor Pro-Tem Kelly Olsen.
Certainly
our program meeting last week on Affordable Housing sharpened
our perception of the growing need in that regard. That urgency
was evident just in terms of the 3,000 persons on the wait list
for the 1,754 units of Fort Collins Housing Authority
Finally,
before the end of October, another look backward and forward
is in order. At the business meeting earlier this month grants
totaling $1,000 were distributed to the Women's Resource Center,
to Elderhaus, McBackPack, Care-a-Van SAINT and Catholic Charities.
So this comes as a reminder that with covenants for IFC membership
renewal having been e-mailed to the faith communities, the opportunity
to make pledges for 2012 is at hand.
Looking
ahead, please note that there are only two IFC meetings remaining
this year - the program meeting this Thursday and the business
meeting on December 1 at Heart of the Rockies
Christian Church.
In the meantime,
this comes with the hope for warm hearts near and far.
